Dessau, 23.05. - 24.05.2014
Summer Workshop 2014: NH-Hotel Dessau-Roßlau The two-day summer workshop of the year 2014 was held in Dessau right at the the junction of the rivers Mulde and Elbe. The city is most famous for its college of architecture Bauhaus. It moved there in 1925 after it had been forced to close in Weimar. Many famous artists were lecturers in Dessau in the following years, among them Walter Gropius, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. However, the Nazis closed the Bauhaus in 1931, and it was not reopened until 1986. There are several examples of Bauhaus architecture in the city; some of them are even included in the UNESCO World Heritage.
As an innovation, this year we travelled by bus from Magdeburg to Dessau - a highly praised service. The NH-Hotel, in which our workshop was held, is located close to the central market right in the city center. The workshop started with a mixture of interesting talks about polycrystalline materials as well as about particle systems from mathematical, physical and engineering points of view.
After a very good lunch two guided tours had been arranged in both, German and English language, at the Bauhaus Meisterhäuser, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Both tours were very informative and the newly renovated Meisterhäuser looked both, old and new at the same time.
In the late afternoon a poster session enabled students, supervisors, and guests to mingle and discuss some selected research projects in detail, after which the dinner was well earned.
On Saturday the final sessions were filled with many interesting talks bringing up lots of new ideas and showing the wonderful progress of our PhD-students.
