Wernigerode, 08.11. - 09.11. 2013
The winter workshop of the year 2013 was held in Wernigerode - a city that is famous for its cultural heritage and is located at the foot of the Harz mountains. Hence, it is called the "Gate to the Harz". Many young couples come to Wernigerode in order to marry in the beautiful town hall or in the romantic castle.
The hotel called Weißer Hirsch, in which our workshop was held, is located right at the central market and opposite to the town hall, which is a 15 minutes walk away from the main train station.
After a small welcome-breakfast, the workshop startet with the first two sessions and a mixture of interesting talks about polycrystalline materials as well as about particle systems from mathematical, physical and engineering points of view. The subsequent lunch at the hotel was very good.
After that two guided tours had been arranged in both, German and English language - the english one was more for first-time visitors and the german tour for many of the colleagues from Sachsen-Anhalt, who has been in Wernigerode before. Both tours were informative and even the weather was very nice.
In the late afternoon the poster session enabled students, supervisors and guests to discuss some research projects in detail, after wich the dinner at the restaurant Brauhaus was very welcome.
On Saturday the final two sessions were filled with lots of interesting talks from students in their final PhD-phase as well as from students just starting out making it an entertaining mixture and a great end of a wonderful workshop.
